Lokmanya Tilak
Dear President Pujya Gurujan and my friends gathered here, I humbly request you to listen calmly to the two words (Lokmanya Tilak speech) that I am going to say to you today about Lokmanya Tilak.
Lokmanya Tilak is the person who boldly and confidently told the British that “Swaraj is my birthright, and I will get it”.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the full name of Lokmanya Tilak, the great freedom fighter of Indian freedom struggle. His birth name was Keshav. But everyone affectionately called him ‘Baal’. So when he grew up, he got the name Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Tilak was born on 23 July 1856 in the village of Chikhali in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. His father’s name was Gangadhar and mother’s name was Parvatibai.
Lokmanya Tilak childhood
Tilak was very intelligent and brilliant from childhood. Mathematics and Sanskrit were his favorite subjects. Just like the saying, ‘A baby’s feet are seen in being cradled’, the radiance of this bright sun started shining from childhood and everyone’s eyes started shining in this radiance. No one could hold Tilak’s hand in mathematics. Once Guruji was teaching mathematics in class.
All the children wrote the given examples in the notebook and started solving them. Tilak, however, did not write a single example in the notebook. When Guruji asked Tilak, without writing in the notebook, Tilak told all the examples correctly with answers and in correct order. Even Guruji was very surprised to see Tilak’s sharp intellect and memory.
Lokmanya Tilak the story of pod shells :-
Tilak had a grudge against injustice from childhood. His rebellious attitude and strong will were visible from his childhood.
Tilak’s story of pod shells is very famous. Once while Tilak was sitting in the classroom, the children from the neigh boring bench ate the pods and threw the shells under Tilak’s bench. When Guruji entered the classroom, he made Tilak stand up and shouted at him to pick up the shells from under the bench.
Tilak then very firmly said “I have not eaten the pods, I will not pick the shells.” And flatly refused to pick up the shells. How dare! How much courage! And what a rage against injustice! Later this attitude did not allow Tilak to sit quietly. This attitude taught them to struggle, to revolt against the injustice of the British rule!
From his childhood he was very fond of participating in enthusiastic and passionate nationalist and revolutionary activities and therefore used to support such nationalists.
Lokmanya Tilak Education :-
At the age of 16, Tilak passed his matriculation examination and at the age of 17, he got married to Satyabhama bai alias Tapi bai. He took admission in Deccan College, Pune for higher education. In 1876, Tilak passed the B.A. examination in mathematics. Not stopping at this, he also did LLB.
How to create awareness among people ?
While in Deccan College, Tilak became friends with Gopal Ganesh Agarkar. In 1880 he established the New English School with the help of Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar and Agarkar and in 1885 started Fergusson College.
Tilak started Maratha and Kesari newspapers for public awareness. At the same time public Ganeshotsav and Shiv Jayanti celebrations were started. The aim behind it was to bring people together and create a sense of nationalism in their minds. In 1896 there was a big drought in Maharashtra. Tilak appealed to the farmers to get organized. Made aware of their rights and made the government aware of their rights through Kesari newspaper. Tilak’s role became important during the plague epidemic that hit Pune in 1897.
After witnessing the atrocities committed by the British to destroy Indian society, Tilak dedicated his life to India and the people of India to achieve freedom from British rule.
Tilak’s roar used to shake the entire British government. Tilak was determined to have complete Swaraj. His unique style of leadership made him popular among the masses, even feared among the British. He was termed as the father of Indian discontent by the British government.
He was a visionary leader who understood the potential of media and communication and used it to rally support against British rule in India. Tilak wrote many prefaces in Kesari. Tilak lashed out at the British with headlines such as ‘Is the head of this government in place?’, ‘Ujadele but where is the sun?’
Death of Lokmanya Tilak
Lokmanya Tilak, the great personality who instilled a sense of nationalism among Indians died on August 1, 1920 due to illness.
This great leader who created a sense of nationalism among Indians is considered as the father of discontent. We should feel proud that our country has got such a great personality. I will end my two words by bowing to such a great leader.
