Rohit Sharma

Rohit Gurunath Sharma is an international cricketer of the Indian cricket team. He was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Rohit is primarily known as an opener. Apart from Test cricket, ODIs and Twenty20s, Rohit also captains the Mumbai Indians team and plays in the Indian Premier League.

He started his Test career on 9 November 2013 against the West Indies cricket team at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, in which Rohit scored 177 runs.

He played Tests after 108 ODIs. His One Day International cricket career started on 23 June 2007 against the Ireland cricket team.

Apart from this, Rohit played his first Twenty20 match against the England cricket team on 19 September 2007.

Rohit Sharma is the first batsman in cricket history to score three double centuries in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals.

Early life: –

Rohit Sharma was born on 30th April 1987 in Bansod area of Nagpur district in Indian state.

His mother Purnima Sharma hails from Visakhapatnam. While his father is Gurunath Sharma who is a supervisor in a transport company.

As his father’s income was very low, Sharma was brought up with his grandfather and uncle in Borivali. Rohit Sharma has a younger brother named Vishal Sharma.

Rohit started playing in cricket camps in 1999 with his uncle’s income.

Rohit’s coach at that time was Dinesh Lad and he said you should change your school to Swami Vivekananda International School as Lad was working there as a coach, so that Rohit would have more facilities to play cricket.

Rohit started his cricket career as an off-spinner but later Lad advised Sharma that you have more batting ability so try to become a good batsman.

Personal Life :–

In April 2015, Sharma got engaged to Ritika Sajdeh and got married on 13 December 2015.
Sharma and Sajdeh became parents to a baby girl named Sameera on 30 December 2018.

Career : –

In domestic career :–

Sharma made his debut for Western Division in March 2005 against Central Division in the Deodhar Trophy at Gwalior. Sharma made his first-class debut for India in July 2006 against New Zealand in Darwin.

He scored 57 and 22. India won by 3 wickets. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006 – 07season and scored 267-ball 205 against Gujarat.
In the final match against Bengal, Sharma scored a half-century in the second innings as Mumbai won the tournament.

Test matches :–

During Sachin Tendulkar’s Farewell Series in November 2013, Sharma made his Test debut against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and become the second highest score on debut by an Indian team behind Shikhar Dhawan.

He followed it up with 111 (not out) in the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In the third Test against South Africa in October 2019, Sharma scored 2000 runs and his first Test double century. He scored 212 runs in the first innings of this match.

2019 Cricket World Cup –

On 15 April 2019, Sharma was appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian squad for the 2016 tournament in England.

In the opening match against South Africa, he scored 122 runs, including his 12000th run in international cricket.

In the match against Sri Lanka, he became the first batsman to score five centuries in the same World Cup and equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in all World Cup matches.

Sharma scored a total of 648 runs in the tournament and was the leading run-getter and became the third Indian player to win the ICC’s Golden Bat award.

Indian Premier League :–

Since 2013, Sharma has been the most successful captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians have won the tournament four times under his leadership.

He is currently (July 2019) one of ten players to have scored 4000 runs in the tournament. With a century, Sharma has 4898 runs and is the third highest run-scorer after Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina.
Records and achievements
Sharma holds the record for the highest individual runs by a batsman in an ODI with 264 against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 13 November 2014.

He is the only player to score three double-centuries in international cricket. He currently holds the record for most career runs and centuries in Twenty20 International cricket.

On 5 October 2019, he became the first batsman to score two centuries on his debut as an opening batsman in a Test match against South Africa.

Sharma broke Shimron Hetmyer’s record for most sixes in a Test series.
